Winners announced in 2009 Contest
Three newspapers were honoured in PubliGroupe/Publicitas and INMA's Innovative Business Models Contest Thursday, May 14, for business practices that challenged traditional newspaper revenue models.

Following the overwhelming success of the competition’s inaugural year in 2008, PubliGroupe/Publicitas and INMA launched the 2009 edition of the Innovative Business Models Contest. It sought to explore the innovative ways media companies extend their brand to fill new spaces in their market, to attract new audiences, and to generate new revenue streams.

Presenting the award during the first day of the INMA World Congress in Miami was Grace Palacios, chief executive officer of Publicitas Americas, and Jean-Christophe Francet, Publigroupe’s deputy head of corporate development.

Norway’s Verdens Gang won the contest’s top prize for the new internet service concept, Pengenedine.no (“your money”). The web site provides customers with quick, safe, and convenient access to the best interest rates on liquid funds. By using the service, customers receive deposit offers within two hours from financial institutions competing for their money. The web site receives a commission on offers from partnering banks that users accept.

Second place in the Innovative Business Models Contest went to The Toronto Star for Wonderlist.ca, an e-mail marketing programme that awards prizes to participants in exchange for their commitment to receiving deals and offers from advertising partners. Advertising partners pay for the privilege of speaking to Wonderlist participants, creating a new revenue stream for the Star.

Also during the presentation, PubliGroupe/Publicitas and INMA presented a prize to a finalist chosen by INMA’s members. Based on a scoring system, INMA members selected a campaign by the Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News. Faced with a retrenching economy, the Detroit Media Partnership launched a transformation project aimed at preserving two independent newspapers by cutting back home delivery of the print newspaper to three days a week, a digital focus toward the future, and geometric change.
